2017 Holiday Wish ListIf you ask me what would be the perfect Christmas present, I’ll go global and put in a plug for a world where quality education, affordable healthcare, and personal safety were valued and mandatory for everyone; a world where people had honest discussions with one another - and listened - instead of just yelling the loudest to be the “winner" of an unwinnable argument; and a world where every road was paved with the strongest pot-hole-proof material possible.
In general, I try not to put too much emphasis on “things.” However, as a photographer with greater control of my immediate surroundings than the world at large and more likely to have an impact on how people view that world, I’ll take a closer look at some things that might help me - or anyone - be a better visual storyteller.
Canon TS-E 17mm UD Aspherical Ultra Wide Tilt-Shift Lens
I absolutely love the Canon 24mm tilt-shift lens for a great deal of my architectural photography. Its sharpness and flexibility help take my photography to a new level. But there are times on interior location shoots where space is at a premium and the wider Canon TS-E 17mm would be perfect. I had the opportunity to borrow one not too long ago and I now understand when people say it’s the perfect compliment to the 24mm and should always be in the camera bag. As long as you have a strong back.
Arca-Swiss C1 Cube Geared Head
I use - and am a huge fan of - the Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head because of its light weight and reasonable price tag but I consider the Arca-Swiss C1 Cube Geared Head to be at the top of the geared head list for precision shooting when leveling is critical. I just figured maybe Santa Claus has more pull with the folks at Arca-Swiss and can get a better deal than I can.
Gitzo Systematic Series 5 Overhead Carbon Tripod
I have a whole collection of tripods that are each good for specific assignments. But the one space I am often challenged to reach is when the shot I need requires a vantage point that’s like twice my height and there are no nearby structures to climb up on. None of my current tripods will stretch quite that high. That’s where the Gitzo Systematic Series 5 Overhead Carbon Tripod with a Gitzo telescopic column would come in handy. Having the ability to elevate my camera over 15 feet in the air would put my work head and shoulders above what I’m doing now. Okay, sorry about that.
Lee Filters 100mm Deluxe Filter Kit
As someone who occasionally uses filters and has already invested in the Lee Filter system, I would love to experiment some more with the Lee Deluxe Filter Kit and introduce new creativity to my landscape photography.
Hasselblad H6D-100c Digital Camera
This one is fantasy want - not a need - but there are few other cameras on the market that will cause more instant camera envy when you walk into a room full of photographers knowledgeable about medium format photography than the Hasselblad H6D. I could go on and on about the sharper focus and superior build quality but, let’s face it, this is a big time “bragging rights” piece of equipment that could round out almost anyone’s fantasy wish list.
This is certainly a fun exercise and while making a wish list is entertaining, I find it’s also a helpful way to take stock and appreciate what you’ve already got. Here’s hoping life is providing you the things you desire, the people you need, and wishing you more social than media this holiday season.
